Origins of smart homes

The origins of smart homes did not start with Insteon or x10 solutions but a company called HVAC are considered to be the initiators. In the 1980’s this organisation introduced Digital Direct Control systems (DDC). Users of these systems were able to adjust the temperature and airflow of buildings, as well as, general energy management. Direct control systems gradually evolved by integrating with fire safety systems and were able to provide rooms with consistent supplies of air that in turn could control fire.

Although these systems are thought of as the inspiration for smart homes, HVAC technology itself technology is not really considered... to be smart home technology, mainly because it has not really found a place in the home but it is still used today in industrial complexes, such as, offices, aquariums and other buildings where humidity and temperature needs to be controlled constantly.

That's interesting, you never think tech like this has much of a history but everything starts something else, I suppose.
